Thanks to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! last !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I got into a healthy discussion with my boss. Now I am first and foremost a gearhead. I love everything car and can appreciate the work and time spent building you car even if it is something I don’t particularly care for or would build (except “stance”. It gets no recognition). He on the other hand is a die hard drag race. Known somewhat by his 1965 Pontiac GTO currently running a na Pontiac 496.

I for instance love seeing a nice rat rod with a well done exhaust. I like when they make their own headers because you spend all that time building a car that is totally yours and you can’t find it in you to weld up some custom pipes? That to me doesn’t make sense.

See, that is cool. It was made to match the vehicle. So not my cup of tea, but I would love to look at this header much more than you regular 4-1 side pipe collector.

My boss is a much more function oriented guy. He would much prefer a nice equal length header built specifically for that car and motor.

Don’t get me wrong, that is absolutely beautiful from an engineering standpoint, but fairly ugly aesthetically. Especially when you think the general public would love that custom rat rod header, but probably not enjoy or understand the beauty of a nice equal length header with perfect welds.

I question whether that header is function-oriented, either, given the extra bends that the exhaust has to make coming out of that fourth cylinder.

I’m torn because on some cars I’d want function and others I’d want aesthetic, and sometimes they’ll cross as well.

For example on my BRZ I swapped to a UEL manifold which looks cool and sounds awesome which was my aim and it removed the midrange torque did so both aesthetic & functional

Well the purpose of equal length is to keep the exhaust pulses from hitting each other, thus freer flowing. That was just a decent sized picture I could find.
